Lab 05 · LED face masks

LED face masks compared: Shark, Dr. Dennis Gross, CurrentBody

LED masks use specific wavelengths of light: red and near-infrared are studied for fine lines and skin tone, blue for acne-causing bacteria. Masks differ a lot in coverage, wavelengths, power and comfort, and the specs are where the real differences hide.

Where these picks come from. This shortlist is based on the makers' published specs, the features that matter for each device type, and availability from the brand or Amazon itself. Our own instrument tests are under way; results will be added here, clearly marked. How we test · How we make money

What actually matters

Wavelengths

Red (around 630 nm), near-infrared (around 830 nm) and blue (around 415 nm) are the ones with the most research. Check which wavelengths a mask actually uses, not just the colour.

Power and dose

Results depend on how much light reaches the skin over a session. Few makers publish irradiance; masks that do are easier to compare.

FDA clearance

Clearance means the device was found substantially equivalent to a legally marketed device for a stated use (for example, wrinkles or mild acne). It is not proof that it works for everyone.

Fit and comfort

Rigid masks keep LEDs at a fixed distance; flexible ones sit closer. Weight and straps decide whether you will actually use it several times a week.

FAQ

Do LED masks really work?

There is clinical evidence that red and near-infrared light can help with fine lines and that blue light can help mild acne, but results are modest and need consistent use over weeks.

Are LED masks safe for the eyes?

Follow the maker's guidance; many include eye protection or recommend closing your eyes. People with light sensitivity or on photosensitising medication should ask a doctor first.
